Marriage

We love weddings - wonderful times of celebration and often very moving. But your wedding is much more than that. It is a life-changing declaration of promises between the bride and groom before God, family and friends. That can be a little daunting. So we want to help. If you decide to have a wedding at St Paul’s we would love to make the service as special for you as possible. We will help you to choose songs, hymns, poems and Bible readings; we will give you a hand with flowers; walk you through the service; and speak God’s blessing over you. We have prepared a sheet with some things you may want to think about for your big day: it has the elements of the service, cost of fees, and also some suggestions for hymns and readings. Check it out.

There are some rules about weddings in the Church of England. We can only marry you normally if you live in our parish - please see map. The area within the red lines is our parish - or if you have a family link with the church. If you do not meet these criteria we can marry you if you come to worship regularly for six months and join our electoral roll. In very rare situations it is possible to get a special licence to enable you to marry at St Paul’s. Drop us an e-mail or give us a call if you want to discuss this.

We also do a great Marriage Preparation course run by our sister organisation Lighthouse a must for anyone getting married with us. The five sessions of the Marriage Preparation Course cover key areas such as communication, handling conflict, sex and finances. `The Marriage Preparation Course’ also uses the brilliant FOCUS questionnaire. In FOCUS, each partner in a couple answers questions about their personal values and preferences and tries to work out what they think their partner might answer. The results are analysed and the feedback becomes the basis for a discussion which helps you to identify areas of strengths and potential weaknesses in your relationship.

Lighthouse also do a great course to help those already in a marriage to make it even better. Look here - Marriage Course.
